The medieval roots of Halloween

The Templar Knight

Pumpkins, trick or treat and witch costumes. We all know about modern Halloween – but how might a Templar have celebrated the same day? Back in the early Middle Ages, the day we now call Halloween was more commonly called All Hallows Eve. It was the day before All Saints Day – a major Catholic feast.

Hallow came from an Old English word for holy or sanctified. The day was a liturgical vigil where the faithful were required to attend church, fast and pray. But there was always a hangover from pre-Christian practices. This was the transition from summer to winter – a time when peasants gathered in the harvest and into November, the ‘blood month’, where animals were killed and salted. Having an abundance of food – hopefully, famine permitting – there was a perfect excuse to feast and drink.

From the moment Christianity became the official…

God honors faith.

19 September 2012 – Day 405 – John Allen –

Many people lack faith, or have very weak faith, because they don’t understand what it is. They think faith is getting what we want, and it is obvious that doesn’t happen nearly as often as we would like. But faith only involves getting what we want when we want God’s will. Faith is putting our trust in God, and believing he will do what he has promised to do. That always works.

If God appeared in a vision and offered to either give you a million dollars cash in a lump sum, or a promise to meet every need you may have for the rest of your life, which would you choose? If you already had a million dollars, what would you tell God if he told you to give it to the poor, and he would provide everything…

There’s More Out There Than Human Beings!

James' Ramblings

I started Kathryn Schifferdecker’s Out of the Whirlwind: Creation Theology in the Book of Job.

Schifferdecker is addressing the question of how the divine speeches in the Book of Job relate to other elements of the book, such as the Satan’s affliction of Job and the speeches of Job and his friends.  As Schifferdecker notes, interpreters have offered different solutions: that the divine speeches are about how God will defeat Satan (Leviathan), which concerns Job’s situation because of the affliction that Job had experienced at the hands of Satan; that God is rebuking Job’s criticism of God by affirming that God knows more than Job does; etc.

Schifferdecker looks to creation theology in the Book of Job in her own attempt to show how the divine speeches relate to the rest of the book.  According to Schifferdecker, Job’s three friends, Job, and even Elihu (whom many scholars think…

America’s 400 richest: $1.7 trillion and counting

Liberty Planet Weblog

My comment…

“We just need to have 10 times this number and then we could take all of their assets and pay off the National debt. Oh damn, we only have $1.7 Trillion. That doesn’t put a dent in it.”

The United States may be in crisis, but the rich keep getting richer. The net worth of the Forbes 400 richest Americans grew by 13 per cent in the past year to $1.7 trillion, as the gap between rich and poor continues to widen at a staggering rate.

The average net worth of the 400 wealthiest Americans shot up by $400 million to a record $4.2 billion, Forbes said, serving to underscore glaring wealth inequality in America.

Bill Gates, the chairman of Microsoft Corp, is one year shy of topping the list for two decades straight with $66 billion, a massive $7 billion hike from the previous year.

Warren Buffet…

Psalm 23. A Psalm of David. The LORD Our Shepherd

Jesus. God Loves Bummyla.

Psalm 23. A Psalm of David. The LORD Our Shepherd

The LORD is my Shepherd;

I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures;

He leads me besides the still waters.

He restores my soul;

He leads me in the paths of righteousness, For His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me

All the days of my life;

And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Amen!

May the LORD bless Nigeria, American and Israel and take care of us; May the LORD make His face…

Jesus. God Loves Bummyla.

The Ten Commandments, Exodus 20:3-17

You shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not make for yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth;

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.

You shall not murder.

You shall not commit adultery.

You shall not steal.

You shall not bear false witness.

You shall not covet.
